Grandma, minor killed in motorcycle accident

BANGUI, Ilocos Norte - A 66-year-old woman and and a high school student died in a motorcycle accident in Barangay Masikil, Bangui, Ilocos Norte on Saturday.

The victims were identified as Paz Balbag, 66, and Christian Respicio, 16 years old.

Based on investigation, Balbag was walking along the street when she was suddenly hit by a motorcycle driven by Respicio.

"Mabilis ang takbo ng motorsiklo na papuntang south direction nang biglang mabunggo niya 'yun victim na nasa gilid ng kalsada na naglalakad.. 'yun highway kasi sharp curve 'yun at madilim," Senior Inspector Crispin Simon, Bangui, Ilocos Norte Police chief said.

Both victims suffered head injuries and wounds on different parts of their bodies.

According to Simon, the motorcycle's head light was not turn on. He also said that Respicio was not under the influence of alcohol when the accident occured.

"Hindi siya nakainom ng alak dahil galing raw siya nanonood ng basketball sa katabing barangay," Simon said.

The family of Balbag refused to comment.

Meanwhile, Liwliwa Respicio, Christian's father, insisted that it was not his son who hit Balbag.

"Noong nasa hospital pa 'yun anak ko, nasabi niya sa akin na hindi raw siya ang nakabunggo sa matanda, may iba siyang tinuturo pero hindi raw niya kilala mga yun," Mr. Respicio said.
