CEBU CITY - Thousands of devotees joined the grand Marian procession in Cebu City Friday night to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Senior Supt. Joel Doria, director of Cebu City Police Office, said the penitential walk drew an estimated 20,000 people who were unfazed despite the rainy weather.
The procession started from the Provincial Capitol and transformed a portion of Osmeña Blvd into a sea of flickering candles.
The devotees proceeded to Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño, where a mass was officiated by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.
"Mary, on this celebration, reminds us that we need God and God loves us,” Archbishop Palma said in his homily.
The mass ended past midnight. Almost 20 Carozzas from the different parishes in Cebu City also joined the prayer walk. - Donna Lavares, ABS-CBN News.
