MANILA (UPDATED) - One person was killed while 10 others were reportedly hurt when an explosion hit a fireworks store and started a fire in Bocaue, Bulacan Wednesday morning.
Speaking to ANC, Bocaue Mayor Joni Villanueva said at least 10 people were hurt after the explosion hit a fireworks store near Barangays Biñang 1st and Lolomboy.
A radio DZMM report later confirmed that one person was killed in the incident.
The mayor said the fire spread from the first store to four other business establishments in the area including a rice mill.
"From what we have learned there are people the bystanders and even those...vehicles that were just parked beside the store were greatly affected and damaged and some even tumbled down and so and some are even are still on fire," she said.
Video taken by an ABS-CBN Bayan Patroller also showed the fire setting off fireworks in the area.
Villanueva said the fire was probably caused by the intense heat.
"The fireworks...probably got soaked in the rain could have dried up and the intense heat could have ignited the fire," she said.
Authorities are set to open half of MacArthur Highway, which was initially closed when the fire started.
Villanueva said she hopes residents will stay away from the area so firemen and rescuers can continue with the operation.
