BUKIDNON - Back in 2013, elementary school janitor Nelson Corbita had no choice but to retire early and use his retirement pay for his children's education.
Four years later, his sacrifice paid off, as his youngest son Jay Nelson topped the mechanical engineering licensure examinations.
The young Corbita graduated summa cum laude at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City in March. He was also a consistent honor student since he was in grade school.
“I felt pressured while taking the exam because I know other people expected me to top it. But I told myself that even if I will not top the exam, at least I knew I did my best to pass it,” he said.
Jay achieved a cumulative rating of 92.20 percent, making him the first mechanical engineering graduate of Xavier University to top the board exam.
According to the Professional Regulation Commission, only 3,517 out of 5,098 takers passed the licensure exam, earning a national passing rate of 68.98 percent.
