SOUTH COTABATO - At least 15 families were advised to evacuate their homes in Sitio Segundo, Barangay Poblacion in Lake Sebu Wednesday due to a landslide.
According to Barangay Captain Bernard Caat, a portion of a hill in the area collapsed Tuesday night.
No resident was hurt in the incident.
Upon inspection, officials found tension cracks on the ground.
"I-force evacuation talaga sila in the meantime habang hindi pa mahuhulog ang area na may tibag, so paalisin na muna naming sila kasi hindi namin alam kasi anytime pwedeng mag-landslide [We will implement forced evacuation while the area has not yet collapsed completely]," he said.
Some of the affected families, however, refused to transfer to a safer place.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of South Cotabato conducted a clearing operation after boulders, mud and a tree covered a portion of the road leading to the town’s hall.
There were at least 10 landslides recorded in two barangays in Lake Sebu since Sunday.
On Tuesday afternoon, a separate landslide occurred in Barangay Talisay.
A tree fell on a vehicle, but no one was hurt.
“Kasi may construction, ito ‘yung isa sa mga cause ng landslide at saka dati kasi dito may drainage, so natabunan ‘yung drainage natin so isang factor ito na nag-cause ng landslide [There is an ongoing construction, so it is one of the causes of the landslide, and there is a drainage that has been buried so it is one factor that caused the landslide],” Caat added.
The Barangay Council is also monitoring the lake for possible fish kill that usually happens due to changes in the temperature of the water.
