MANILA – For House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, Senator Leila de Lima is simply being hit by karma.
Suarez, an ally of former President and now House Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, said that De Lima is suffering the same fate that Arroyo suffered at the hands of the Aquino administration, under which De Lima served as Justice Secretary.
"Karma lang iyang nangyari sa iyo. Tignan mo naman yung ginawa kay [Arroyo]…ngayon napatunayan ng korteng wala siyang kasalanan…Ang dami niyang ginawang paglabag sa kanyang tungkulin bilang kalihim ng katarungan. It will catch up to you ultimately," Suarez said.
De Lima prevented Arroyo's medical travel due to complications arising from cervical spine surgery in 2011, despite a restraining order issued by the high court. She also investigated and led the prosecution of Arroyo for many cases including the alleged sabotage of the 2007 elections.
Earlier this month, the Sandiganbayan dismissed the remaining graft case against Arroyo, husband Mike Arroyo, and former Commission on Elections chair Benjamin Abalos in relation to a supposedly anomalous deal with service provider NBN-ZTE.
"May mga tao kasi na kapag nakahawak ng power eh akala mo wala nang katapusan. This is a sheer case of abuse of power…ang moral of the story is public officials should be accountable for their acts, and tread carefully on legalities of what doing," Suarez said.
Meanwhile, another Arroyo ally, Buhay partylist Representative Lito Atienza, said he hopes government officials learned their lesson.
"We should be reminded to be very, very careful how we wield power and exercise authority," he said.
