Baguio City Jail opens salon and spa to help female detainees earn a living while detained.
BAGUIO CITY – Need a haircut or massage? Here's a unique spa for those seeking a one-of-a-kind ambiance.
The Baguio City Jail has opened a salon and spa, a project aimed at helping inmates at its female dormitory to still provide for their families even while detained.
Its walls painted in inviting pastel pink and purple, the spa started offering services on Monday.
Fifty inmates who received training from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) work at the salon and spa.
“'Yung iba, they came with the skill already. Ang ginawa namin is to enhance those skills, para habang nandito sila ay makatulong sila sa kanilang family," one of the inmates said.
Within a week, the inmates already had 160 customers and collected over P13,809.
Some of the clients said they were satisfied given the relatively cheaper prices at the jail salon and spa.
“Maganda 'yung services nila kasi taken care of ka. Sa iba kasi medyo mataas ang singil, dito mababa lang,” customer Elisa Chan said.
A chunk of the income goes to inmates who render services while a portion is allotted for a group fund.
Alias 'Josie', an inmate since 2016, is happy to still be able to provide even a small amount of money for her son.
“Now na ganitong may livelihood, nakakapag-provide pa rin kami sa family outside, so hindi namin nafi-feel na wala kaming silbi sa pamilya namin, na pabigat lang kami,” she said.
Jail Insp. April Rose Ayangwa said activities like these do not only benefit the inmates, but also the jail guards.
“Napakalaking tulong ito as to their behavior. Kapag busy sila, hindi sila palaaway. Sa management, magaan 'yung pag-manage,” she said.
The jailhouse salon and spa offers the following services:
Hair rebond: P400-P600
Hair dye: P150-P25
Hot oil: P150-P250
Body scrub: P250
Body massage: P250
Foot spa: P200
Hand spa: P100

Those who would like to visit may go straight to the city jail, but the management said it would be better to make reservations through these numbers: (074) 619-2764 and (074) 422-2851.
Aside from the salon and spa, the Baguio City Jail also has a host of other livelihood programs for inmates, among them baking, cross-stitching, and making crochet and handicraft products.
The inmates' work are displayed at the Inmates’ Livelihood Display Center.
The city jail management said it aims to train inmates on different skills to help them start a new life upon their release.
