NEW TROPICAL CYCLONE THREATENS PH

MANILA -- (UPDATED) The state weather bureau has placed Batanes province under signal number 4, as Typhoon "Ferdie" (international name Meranti) maintained strength.

Signal number 3 is hoisted over Babuyan Group of Islands; while Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and Northern Cagayan have been placed under signal number 2, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)'s 5:00 pm bulletin Tuesday.

The rest of Cagayan, Northern Isabela, Kalinga, Abra, and Northern Ilocos Sur are under signal no. 1

"Ferdie" was last located 165 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

It was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 215 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of up to 250 kph.

It is forecast to move west-northwest at 24 kph.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the 600-kilometer diameter of the typhoon.

Ferdie is expected to pass over Batanes area early Wednesday morning and exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday afternoon.

But another storm is brewing outside PAR.

The tropical storm, with international name "Malakas," is expected to enter PAR Wednesday. It will be named "Gener" once it enters PAR.

Gener is also expected to enhance the rains brought by the southwest monsoon (habagat).

It has maximum sustained winds of 75 kph and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It is also not expected to make landfall.

"Although hindi naman ito direktang tatama sa ano mang isla dito sa Pilipinas, but 'yung epekto nito sa pag-uulan ay nandito pa rin. 'Yung Gener ang magpapalakas ng pag-uulan dito sa Luzon [Gener may not make landfall but it will still bring bad weather]," National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said.

Jalad also said NDRRMC already prepared for the effects of Ferdie and Gener.

"Meron na ring paghahanda 'yung ating response units dito sa ating regions," he added.

Despite being inside the PAR at the same time, Ferdie and Gener will not have an effect on each other.

"Actually hindi po sila magkakaroon ng tinatawag nating interaction dahil po sila ay more than 2,000 'yung kanilang distance. Paglabas nung isa, 'yung isa nasa loob. Hindi sila mag-iinteract, pero 'yung movement, more or less, kaiba itong si Gener [They will not interact. They are very far from each other. although they are both inside PAR. But in terms of movement, Gener is different," Dr. Esperanza Cayanan, PAGASA Weather Division chief, said.
