MANILA - Typhoon ''Ferdie'' intensifies further as it continues to move west northwest, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
In its 5 p.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said the typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 220 kph as of 4 p.m.
Spotted 780 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, Ferdie is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains within its 500-kilometer diameter, PAGASA said.
The weather bureau has hoisted tropical cyclone warning signal 1 over Cagayan, Northern Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands.
If the storm continues to move west-northwest at 22 kph, it will leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday afternoon via Itbayat, Batanes.
