NUEVA VIZCAYA - A 78-year-old man was arrested in Bayombong town for allegedly molesting a 9-year-old special child.

Bayombong Police Station identified the suspect as Samuel Obeña, a widower.

According to Senior Police Officer 1 Melissa Gauan of the Women and Children Protection Desk, two residents allegedly caught the suspect in the act of having sexual intercourse with the victim along a road.

"May napadaan na nakitang nakahubad yung matanda, sinabi dun sa witness natin. Nung lapitan ng witness, nakita niya sa harap yung bata na nakababa na yung jogging pants," Gauan said.

(Someone saw the old man naked and told the witness about it. The witness went for a closer look and saw the child whose jogging pants were already down.)

Obeña was immediately arrested by barangay officials, but he denied the allegation.

"Nakaupo ako dun sa semento, tapos bigla umupo sa akin yung bata. Sinabi kong umalis siya kasi baka mapasama ako. Tapos may nakakita nga," Obeña said.

(I was sitting on a concrete when the child sat on my lap. I told her to leave because I might get in trouble. Then someone saw us.)

The result of the medical examination, however, showed that the victim was sexually assaulted.

"Positive ang result. Meron siyang laceration," Gauan said.

(The result was positive. She has laceration.)

Gauan said it's possible the victim has been repeatedly molested as indicated in the result of the medical examination. This finding was backed by another witness who revealed that the same incident happened on September 2.

The victim’s mother expressed anger over the suspect whom they had treated as a member of their family.

Speaking in the vernacular, the victim’s mother said, "He (Obeña) often comes to our house for a meal. I could not believe that he could harm my child given her condition."

Obeña was charged for violating Republic Act 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law. He is now under the custody of the Bayombong Police Station.

Meanwhile, the case was also endorsed to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for the victim’s counselling.
