MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday defended anew his brutal war on drugs, saying he went as far as giving financial assistance to cops who got suspended due to anti-illegal drugs operations.
In Davao City, Duterte said his anti-drug campaign was a success because he gave financial assistance to police officers who were suspended due to violent arrests.
"Dito sa Davao, medyo success story. Sabihin mo lang sa akin ang totoo, wag mo ako bolahin kasi babarilin kita. Ano ang nangyari? Pagdating ng suspension order, ako na magbayad ng take-home pay niya para walang aberisyon ‘yung income niya. Ginagawa ko talaga ‘yan sa lahat," he said.
[Davao's case is a success story. As long as these policemen tell me the truth...if not I will shoot them. You know what happened? When the suspension order is served, I pay for that cop's take-home pay so his salary isn't affected. I really did that.]
"Ako naman sa pulis if mali talaga, as in mali, wala ako magawa sa inyo. But for those who perform their duties, hindi kasi naintindihan talaga ng Filipino," Duterte said in a speech at the 11th founding anniversary of Eastern Mindanao Command.
[But if the policeman erred, I really cannot do anything. But for those who perform their duties...well some Filipinos do not really understand.]
Duterte said the duty of the arrested person is to surrender peacefully or else the arresting officer will have to use force.
"Otherwise, kung may resistance, gumamit ng baril, the duty now of the arresting officer, you have to overcome the resistance. Now kung lumaban 'yan, and if feel ang hawak 45 mamamatay ka talaga. Look, patayin mo na pu****-***. Hiningi nila ‘yan, ika nga," he added.
The President also sympathized with police officers who were suspended while carrying out his order to stop illegal drugs.
"May iba naman ayaw talaga sumama. Pipilitin ng pulis yan. Pag lumaban masuntok, masugatan, pagkatapos pagdating dun sa, ipa-doktor, medical certificate: hematoma, bruises.
"On the basis of ‘yung hindi man maniwala na lumaban, pa-file-an ‘yung pulis ng kaso. Kaya karamihan noon, ang mga pulis ayaw magkaroon ng kaso kasi pag nasuspend yan, wala na yang pagkain, at eskwelahan ng bata tapos na," he added.
The President however emphasized that he will not tolerate policemen who shoot their targets from behind.
"Basta sino masabit ganoon, performance of duty. Pero kung barilin mo nang patalikod, sa America nga nakahiga lang ‘yung black doon," he said.
