DENR nabs man selling over 140 rare animals in Cebu

CEBU CITY – Operatives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Saturday detained a man here for selling endangered and threatened animals.

Abel Dakay, 38, was arrested on Magallanes Street here for selling rare animals including African lovebirds, reticulated pythons, and sea turtles.

DENR operatives confiscated the animals, which included 32 lovebirds, 13 black masked birds, 63 budgerigars, 2 crested mynas, 4 racket-tailed parrots, 11 cockatiels, 12 Philippine hanging parrots or colasisis, 1 Burmese python, and 3 Asian box turtles.

DENR enforcement head Ariel Rica said Dakay will be charged for violating Republic Act No. 9147, or the "Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act".
