SOUTH COTABATO - A man was killed while his mother was hurt when fire razed an ancestral house in Barangay General Paulino Santos in Koronadal City.

The victim was identified as Efhraim Manuel. His mother, Merlina Manuel, sustained first degree burns while trying to save him.

Investigation revealed that the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

[We have established that the fire started in Efhraim's room. We found him dead, leaning on the wall of his room. Based on his position, it is possible that he was drunk, or he fell asleep while cooking because of drunkenness. The kitchen is also inside his room. It is also possible that he was smoking, and then he fell asleep.]

The fire immediately spread because the house was made of light materials.

The blaze, which lasted for more than an hour, destroyed property worth around P1 million.
