MANILA- Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday said the series of raids in Ozamiz City which led to the death of the mayor and 15 others sends a “chilling effect” to narco-politicians.
Robredo said the bloody raid also raises questions on how the police conducts its raids given that this is not the first time that a politician subject to a police operation has died.
“Ito kasi puwede mong tingnan both ways. Puwede siyang threat para sa... Parang may chilling effect ito, eh. Parang threat siya sa mga narco-politicians na patuloy pa ring ginagawa iyong hindi dapat gawin,” she said in an interview with reporters at Navotas City.
“Pero on the other hand, ano din ito, kuwestiyon din sa paraan, sa paraan ng paggawa,” she added.
The series of raids in the houses of the Parojinogs in San Roque Lawis, Ozamiz City early Sunday left Ozamiz Mayor Reynaldo "Aldong" Parojinog and 15 others dead,
The mayor's daughter and son, Ozamiz City Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog and Reynaldo Parojinog Jr, were arrested following the raids and were charged for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
Last year police killed Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. while serving a search warrant in the latter’s detention cell.
Cops involved in the incident were originally charged with murder but the Department of Justice downgraded the charges to homicide. The cops are now out on bail.
Robredo emphasized the need for a rigorous probe on the Ozamiz raids so as not to lose public trust on government institutions.
“Tayo naman, gusto nating magtiwala sa mga institusyon ng pamahalaan na gagawin iyong imbestigasyon na nararapat, dahil iyong tiwala naman na ito, parang ito iyong pinaka-essence ng demokrasya natin,” she said.
The vice president added that she shares President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to narco-politicians and illegal drug users to surrender and cooperate with the government.
"Huwag nang hintayin, huwag nang hintayin na maabutan sila ng long arm ng batas, pero kusa na sanang mag-surrender. Pagpapakita ng kooperasyon sa ating pamahalaan,” she said.
