NEGROS ORIENTAL - Enemies of the owner of the heavy equipment, and not members of the New People's Army (NPA), were involved in arson incident in Barangay Catigucan in Siaton town, Negros Oriental early Sunday morning, police said Wednesday.

A Siaton police official said the incident, which involved torching of heavy equipment, was quarry related.

"It is quarry related," Chief Inspector Varie Villanobos said.

NPA rebels were earlier suspected of burning and strafing the heavy equipment, after a witness allegedly heard the perpetrators shouting "Mabuhay ang NPA!"

Police said several groups in the community have been protesting against the quarry site owned by the Medalla family.

Despite clearing the NPA's involvement in the incident, Siaton Mayor Fritz Diaz said policemen and military personnel will continue to guard the area.
