U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim on Thursday reiterated Washington's commitment to the Philippine-U.S. alliance and expressed support for the Philippine government's efforts to fight terrorists and rebuild Marawi City.
During the U.S. Embassy's Independence Day reception, Kim noted the "deep and special" partnership of the two countries.
He assured the Philippine military and Marawi residents of U.S. support "in any way possible."
“We will continue to stand by the Armed Forces of the Philippines as they courageously fight terrorism to keep this country safe. And we are proud to support President Duterte's determination to secure and rebuild Marawi for its residents,” he said.
"Even as we have this celebration tonight, our thoughts are with the [military] and the residents of Marawi. They are going through a very, very difficult time. And I want to assure them that we will continue to support them in any way possible going forward."
Vice President Leni Robredo, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano were among the officials who attended the reception.
