ZAMBOANGA CITY — Port officials here were surprised to see the image of a dead infant inside a travelling bag come up in the baggage scanner at the passenger terminal of the Zamboanga City Port, Thursday morning.

The Philippine Coast Guard said the bag was owned by Alex Insana, 33, who was on his way to board a boat en route to Basilan.

When questioned by authorities, Insana said his aunt, Andah Kabulot, gave birth to the stillborn baby.

Insana said he was authorized by Kabulot to bring the infant home to their province to bury it, according to Muslim rites.

He said he "failed" to secure documents for the infant's transport.

The infant was declared dead at Zamboanga City Medical Center.

Upon informing his cousin, a relative appeared before authorities presenting a death certificate from the hospital prompting the authorities to release Insana.
