One of the six abducted Vietnamese nationals was rescued by government forces in Sumisip, Basilan, the military said Friday.
Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez, commander of Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom), said Hoang Vo was one of the crewmen of MV Royal 16, a cargo vessel hijacked by armed men in November 2016.
Galvez said Vo, who sustained minor injuries, escaped his abductors as military launched offensives against Abu Sayyaf bandits.
Col. Juvy Max Uy, commander of Joint Task Force Basilan, said Vo was treated before he was transported to Wesmincom in Zamboanga City.
He added the military was optimistic that the remaining 5 hostages will be rescued soon.
