MANILA - At least 7 people were injured after at least 6 vehicles figured in a multiple collision along España corner Blumentritt street in this city on Monday afternoon.
Police inspector Philipp Ines of the España-Blumentritt station said those injured were given emergency treatment before being rushed to the hospital. No deaths were reported, he added.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier tweeted that the vehicles involved in the accident included a bus, a van, a sports utility vehicle, a cab and two passenger jeepneys.
Ines said the accident, which occurred at past 1:40 p.m., after a Corimba bus crashed onto the sidewalk, hitting the other vehicles in the process.
The bus driver, Rigor Perse de Guerra, who is now under police custody, claimed the bus plying the SM Fairview-Baclaran route lost its breaks when he reached España area.
Perse de Guerra said he tried to use the bus' engine break to no avail. He instead chose to crash the bus onto a tree on the sidewalk to avoid casualties.
The accident caused heavy traffic on España.
