Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte on Tuesday said the apprehension of the Maute patriarch was “crucial” to end the group’s “reign of terror.”
In a statement, Duterte said the arrest of Cayamora Maute, the father of the Maute brothers battling government troops in Marawi City, was “an important development...to reclaim peace and defeat lawlessness and terrorism."
She commended Task Force Davao for apprehending Cayamora at a checkpoint in Toril on Tuesday morning.
“To the Dabawenyos, let us support our soldiers and our police. Let us always support our government,” she said.
Cayamora Maute is the father of Maute brothers Omar and Abdullah who are fighting government forces in Marawi City.
Lt. Col. Nestor Mondia, Task Force Davao checkpoint commander, said they stopped a van when they noticed one of them was wearing a surgical mask and bore a resemblance to Cayamora.
In a press briefing, Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, regional director of Philippine National Police XI, said Cayamora confirmed his identity.
Task Force Davao also discovered a grenade and .45 caliber pistol inside the van. - with reports from Paul Palacio, Hernel Tocmo, and Vina Araneta-Pilapil, ABS-CBN News
