An 18-year-old girl was abducted by armed men in Jolo, Sulu on Thursday, an official of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said.

Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana, the commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, identified the abducted student as Ling-ling Sahipa, a resident of Barangay Samak, Talipao, Sulu.

He said Sahipa went to Jolo National High School past 1 p.m. Thursday to follow up some school requirements for her enrollment.

However, hours later, she sent a text message to one of her friends saying that she was abducted by armed men somewhere in Jolo.

The abductors were asking for P100,000 for her release.

Sobejana said the police are still investigating the case to verify the claim.

He said this was a police matter as of now and not an Abu Sayyaf-related case.

Meanwhile, an Army officer was killed after a fierce gun battle between government forces and Abu Sayyaf bandits in Barangay Latih, Patikul, Sulu early Friday morning.

Sobejana said the soldiers from the 41st Infantry Battalion were conducting a focused military operation when they were met with heavy gunfire from the bandits.

He said there were traces of blood in the area where the bandits positioned themselves during the firefight, an indication that there might be casualties among the Abu Sayyaf.

Offensives against the Abu Sayyaf continued despite the ongoing operations in Marawi City against the Maute group.
