PALAWAN -- Twelve abandoned sea turtles locally known as "pawikan" were rescued by authorities in the municipality of Balabac in this province.

Authorities received an intelligence report that sea turtles were spotted in Sitio Saod, Barangay Mangsee Island in Balabac.

Personnel from the Philippine Marines, Philippine Navy and Special Operations Unit-Maritime Group immediately responded and rescued the abandoned sea turtles last May 14.

According to authorities, there were 14 sea turtles but two were already dead. The animals were found with ropes tied around their flippers to prevent them from escaping to the sea.

No suspect was found in the area. Authorities documented and immediately released the sea turtles to the sea.

Sea turtles are considered critically endangered.
