House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas on Wednesday said former critics of the Duterte administration may be welcome to join the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
The statement came after former members of the Liberal Party joined PDP-Laban last week.
Fariñas expects more politicians to jump to the ruling party as the country moves closer to the 2019 midterm elections.
"Hindi kami nagre-recruit because thse natural tendency is they gravitate to the party in power. I’m an ordinary member, I just happen to be the majority leader. I’m a mere member, I do not speak for the PDP,” he said.
Fariñas said that he had been approached by lawmakers Toff de Venecia and Edgar Sarmiento for membership in the party.
"They always ask me to be their sponsor para mas mabilis 'yung kanilang entry process,” he said.
Fariñas said party membership has a bearing on committee memberships, as well as memberships in the Commission on Appointments (CA), and House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal.
"Ang computation sa CA is based on party representation. I computed it. Kailangan if any party has at least 24 members they’re entitled to one seat," he said.
Farinas added that this is why Rep. Edcel Lagman, an independent, cannot be admitted into the Justice Committee.
Another example is the case of former Deputy Speaker Gloria Arroyo, who lost membership in all committees when she lost her deputy speakership for voting against the death penalty bill.
