MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday warned those who won in the recently held barangay elections and still have links to the illegal drug trade.
“Kayong mga nasa droga at nanalo kayo, your election to the barangay position is not a guarantee. Do not [seek cover] on that title,” Duterte told reporters in a chance interview in Malacañang.
Some 1 million candidates vied for 671,168 seats, split equally between the barangay council and the Sangguniang Kabataan, the lowest unit of government.
Duterte earlier alleged that 40 percent of barangay captains in the entire country were involved in illegal drugs.
Before the election day, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency released the names of 207 barangay officials linked to the illegal drug trade, supposedly to guide the voters.
The PDEA has so far filed a case against only one bet in its list.
