MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday said she does not believe the impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte will prosper.
Speaking to reporters in Davao City, Robredo said while the impeachment process is an important part of the democratic process, she doubts the bid will garner enough support at the House of Representatives.
"Kung babasehin natin sa statements ng mga members ng House, mukhang kaunti yung support na makukuha nito," she said.
"Mahalaga pa rin yung proseso kasi ito ay bahagi ng democratic institutions natin, democratic processes. Pero yun, honest assessment, kung tingin ko magpoprosper, tingin ko hindi," she added.
As of posting, lawmakers at the House are deliberating on the sufficiency in form of the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano.
In his initial complaint, Alejano accussed Duterte of amassing P2-billion in unexplained wealth. He also said Duterte should be held responsible for the killings of drug suspects under his administration.
He then filed a supplemental complaint, saying Duterte failed to defend the country's sovereign rights and territorial claims when he supposedly allowed Chinese presence in the resource-rich Benham Rise.
Robredo herself is facing impeachment complaints in the House for allegedly betraying public trust when she criticized the government's war on drugs with a video sent to the United Nations.
