MANILA - An anti-crime watchdog on Tuesday said it is set to call for the impeachment of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales over her alleged inefficiency in going after corrupt politicians.

The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption said the complaint will be anchored on the Ombudsman's delay in resolving cases, including the homicide charges they filed against former president Benigno Aquino III in connection to the 2015 Mamasapano carnage that claimed the lives of 44 elite cops.

"Iyung mga kasong isinampa namin doon, super tagal na. Marami pang iba. In fact, nadadagdagan lang nang nadadagdagan," VACC founding chairman Dante Jimenez said in a phone interview with radio DZMM.

"I confirm na may mga ganoong developments na binubuo ang VACC, ang mga lawyers' group with regards to the possible impeachment complaint na ihahain po namin very soon."

(The cases we filed there have been pending for a very long time. In fact, new cases are lodged without the old ones being resolved. I confirm that the VACC and several lawyers' groups are pushing developments with regards to the possible impeachment complaint that we will file very soon.)

Jimenez added that Morales' supposed inefficiency in leading her office leads to unreasonable delay which in turn caused the dismissal of the cases before the Sandiganbayan.

"Hindi na nako-control ni Ombudsman Morales ang mga tao niya. In other words, ineffective siya as far as managing the affairs of the Ombudsman," he said.

(Ombudsman Morales has failed to control her people. In other words, she has been ineffective in managing the affairs of the Ombudsman.)

The impending ouster case against Morales would have to be endorsed by the House of Representatives.

If the VACC secures the endorsement, the case will be the second impeachment complaint lodged under the 17th Congress.

Last March, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano filed the first impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte over the deaths linked to his war on drugs, his alleged role in the Davao Death Squad and his foreign policy towards China.

A separate draft impeachment complaint was filed against Vice President Leni Robredo, but it has yet to be endorsed at the lower chamber.
