DAVAO CITY - A suspected Abu Sayyaf member armed with bomb components was killed in a police operation in Barangay Magtood, Maa this city at dawn on Tuesday.

Initial report from Talomo Police said the suspect was traveling along the diversion road on board a motorcycle with an unidentified driver when Davao City intelligence operatives flagged them down.

The suspect allegedly pulled out his gun and fired at the police, prompting the officers to return fire. The driver, meanwhile, escaped.

Recovered from the suspect were a 60-mm mortar shell, a detonation cord, two blasting caps and a cal.38 pistol.

Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum confirmed that the suspect is a member of the Abu Sayyaf based on intelligence information.

Tagum showed a picture of the suspect to prove that he was a member of the terrorist group.

Police carried out the operation based on the report that a group of armed men have entered the city, where a heightened alert status remains amid the continuing terror threat.

Authorities are still pursuing the motorcycle driver who fled the scene.
