A senior police officer died in a road accident Thursday morning in Barangay Crossing-Pulupandan in Pulupandan town, Negros Occidental.

Police identified the victim as SPO2 Graciano Pineda Jr., 55.

Pineda, of the regional headquarters support group of the Police Regional Office 18, was about to retire this year.

Police Senior Inspector Alfred De Leon, chief of Pulupandan Municipal Police Station, said the victim was traveling south when a pickup vehicle driven by Fr. Juancho Omaño hit Pineda's motorcycle as Omaño tried to overtake Pineda.

Omaño, parish priest of Iglesia Filipina Independiente in nearby San Enrique town, surrendered to police and alleged it was Pineda that hit his car, not the other way around.

Omaño added that he had already overtaken Pineda when the motorcycle hit the rear end of his car.

Pineda died at hospital later in the afternoon due to severe head injuries. Omaño is currently detained at the police station.

Police are waiting for Pineda's family to file corresponding charges.
