MANILA - Will the firing of Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno pave the way for the appointment of ex-senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr as DILG chief?
According to Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, there was no mention of the possibility that Marcos will replace Sueno.
"There has been no comment, no mention, and absolutely no reference to him (Marcos) as far as I'm concerned and as far as the Cabinet is concerned," he said in a press briefing.
The announcement of Sueno's dismissal was made at the end of the 14th Cabinet meeting.
Abella said Sueno was fired because President Rodrigo Duterte lost "trust and confidence" in him.
He added, no names have been floated yet on who will replace Sueno.
Duterte earlier refuted news reports that Marcos would get the key Cabinet post. “He’s not interested,” the President said.
In a previous interview with ANC, Vice President Leni Robredo said there had been talk Marcos would be given a Cabinet portfolio "as early as the inauguration" in June, but the Constitution prohibited his appointment within a year of losing the elections.
Robredo won over Marcos in the 2016 vice presidential race by a hairline, and the Marcos camp has since lodged an electoral protest to contest her victory.
