Replacements chosen for suspended Puerto Princesa barangay officials

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – A new set of officials was appointed by residents in Barangay Milagrosa in this city after 8 barangay officials were suspended earlier this year.

The barangay captain and councilors were suspended on January 17, after the Office of the Ombudsman found them guilty of misconduct.

Residents chose the officers-in-charge (OICs) through a selection process conducted during the Simultaneous Barangay General Assembly last March 25, 2017.

The Office of the Mayor and Community Affairs Office facilitated the selection process.

According to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Puerto Princesa City, even though the city mayor appointed them, the new set of barangay officials will only perform their duties after President Rodrigo Duterte signs their appointments.

The DILG is still waiting for the mayor’s office to give them the list of names to be forwarded to the Office of the President.

The Ombudsman’s decision to suspend the barangay officials came after a certain Miguel Bermejo, Jr. filed a case on alleged irregularities in the bidding for the construction of the Pio Manlavi Road.

Bermejo said that the bidding was set on February 20, 2016, but he found that the bidding was actually done on February 10, 2016, 10 days before the scheduled bidding.

Only the secretary and treasurer were not suspended. Instead of barangay clearances for constituents, secretary's clearances will be instead be issued.

This is the first time in Puerto Princesa City that a whole set of barangay officials was suspended, and others appointed in their stead.
