MANILA – Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III on Thursday said government authorities cannot just enter the Senate building to serve the arrest warrant on Senator Leila de Lima.
“Kung ang purpose ng pagpasok eh para mag-aresto eh hindi pupuwede,” Pimentel told dzMM.
“Kami ang in charge sa security ng aming bahay. We have our own security. Meron kaming judgment call kung sino ang iba-bar namin na pumasok dyan.”
A Regional Trial Court (RTC) on Thursday ordered the arrest of De Lima for her alleged involvement in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) illegal drug trade.
Presiding Judge Juanita Guerrero of Muntinlupa RTC Branch 204 signed the order to issue an arrest warrant against De Lima.
Pimentel said his order to bar arresting officers from entering the Senate premises does not mean that De Lima will be able to evade arrest.
He said the arresting officers can course the warrant through the Senate security officers, who can then the give it to De Lima.
Pimentel, however, said it would be better if the arrest can be done tomorrow.
As of posting, De Lima remains holed up in her office at the Senate.
Pimentel noted, De Lima had earlier said that she will comply with the arrest order, even as the senator's camp has expressed surprise over the sudden issuance of the arrest despite their pending motion to quash.
