Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu Chapter president Mundlyn Martin is seeking justice for the death of lawyer Jonah John Ungab.
During DYAB's radio program, Martin requested help from Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald dela Rosa and President Rodrigo Duterte to safeguard lawyers in the country.
Martin said she was deeply saddened by the news about her fellow lawyer and former professor's death.
She considered Ungab as a close family friend.
Martin said lawyers are just doing their job and must not be killed for fulfilling their duties.
"We are only dealing with work and we are doing it under the law," she said.
"Kon di man unta mo makauyon sa among trabaho, mo file mog disbarment oy didto mawagtangan mis trabaho apan buhi mi."
(If you take offense with our work, you can file a disbarment case against us. We may lose our jobs, not our lives.)
She hoped the police will conduct a thorough investigation on the case.
Martin said Duterte should give lawyers licenses to carry firearms because of risks and threats at work.
"Kon makadungog si President Duterte ani, hinaot unta sir nga tagaan mig exemption nga makagunit mi. Makakuha mi og License to own and possess firearms o LTOPF. Di mi lisudlisuron sa among lisensya sa pusil."
(If President Duterte can hear this, I hoped he will give us an exemption to carry firearms or license to own and possess firearms. It will not be a burden getting one.)
She also made the same request to Dela Rosa.
Martin even suggested the IBP can recommend who among the lawyers are in need of firearms.
She said the government should not wait for another lawyer's death to take action.
"Let's help each other. Let's protect each other," she said.
Ungab was driving his car when 2 individuals approached his vehicle and shot him along S. Osmeña Street in Cebu City on Monday.
Ungab had just come from a court promulgation related to a case against Kerwin Espinosa.
