At least 70 fiberglass fishing boats were given to 350 fisherfolk families in Brooke's Point, Palawan Thursday as part of the government's anti-poverty program, Agricuture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said.
Priced at P180,000 per unit, each boat is equipped with two engines, an ice storage chest, nets, fishing gear, hooks and line.
Each boat will be co-owned by five families to avoid "the abuse or sale of the boats which has always been the problem of government programs which give out equipment to poor families," Piñol said.
"(Fishermen) will be provided with an initial working capital of P5,000 for each boat to be used in the purchase of fuel, ice and their provisions as they sail out for the first time," the agriculture chief said.
At least 26 other vessels were also given by the government to Bantay Dagat units of different towns in Palawan to beef up the province's anti-illegal fishing operations.
