MANILA - House Justice Committee chair Rey Umali on Thursday sought the cancellation of the barangay and SK elections in May.
Umali made the suggestion when he and House Appropriations Committee chair Karlo Nograles joined Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez in the oath-taking of new members of ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan in Agusan del Sur.
Alvarez earlier announced that Nograles and fellow representatives Albee Benitez and Geraldine Roman will be part of PDP-Laban's senatorial ticket for the 2019 midterm elections.
Asked if the administration ticket is already complete, Umali told media during an ambush interview, "Hindi pa siguro.
Papaano namin magagawa yun in two months? "
The House leadership previously expressed preference for a plebiscite on a new charter to be done simultaneously with the May 2018 barangay and SK elections.
Umali said he has filed a bill and is confident the supermajority will support his proposal since the postponement of the BSKE is a congressional prerogative.
The barangay and SK elections were earlier announced to finally push through on May 14 following a series of delays.
The last barangay elections were held in October 2013, while the last SK elections were held in October 2010.
