CAGAYAN DE ORO - An incumbent village chief and councilor were arrested by authorities for carrying guns and explosives in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Tuburan in Cagayan de Oro City on Tuesday, police said.

Epimaco Sacalon and Michael Talampas are officials of Barangay Cauyunan, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

They were on board a motorcycle when police flagged them down.

Authorities recovered from them a caliber .45 pistol, an M79 grenade launcher, 11 40mm explosives and assorted ammunition.

Sacalon said his firearms were for self-defense against communist rebels in his barangay.

The suspects will face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, including illegal possession of explosives.
