DAVAO ORIENTAL - A junior officer of the Philippine Army was killed in an encounter with the New People's Army in Manay, Davao Oriental, Wednesday afternoon.
The 10th Infantry Division identified the soldier killed in action as 2LT. Miguel Victor Alejo, platoon leader of the 67th Infantry Battalion.
According to the report from the 10th ID, an armed lawless group believed to be members of the New People's Army attacked a joint police and army team in Sitio Paliwason, Brgy. Lambog, in Manay town.
The soldiers and police are reportedly heading to Brgy. Lambog after receiving information from local officials in 2 villages that the armed group was threatening and intimidating the residents, forcing them to evacuate.
The harassment was reported by two barangay officials to the Manay Municipal Police Station.
After the encounter, troops recovered an M16 rifle from the area.
The remains of Alejo were brought to St. Peter Funeral, Panacan, Davao City.
"It is very sad that this incident happened while the NPA was supposed to be observing a unilateral ceasefire which they say is still in effect until February 10,” Major General Rafael C Valencia, 10ID commander said in a statement.
