MAGUINDANAO, Philippines – The ongoing firefight between Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) 118th and 105th base commands in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao has so far left two dead and 6 others wounded.

The two killed were from the 118th base command. Two were also wounded from their side. The remaining 4 are from the 105th base command.

The clash began Saturday evening, but gunshots can still be heard in the area today.

Based on the result of the emergency meeting called by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, a total of 2,551 families from three villages were affected by the encounter.

The evacuees are now temporary staying in schools and in relatives’ homes.

Meanwhile, the military said they will not intervene in the clash but would ensure the safety of residents.

The MILF-Coordinating Committee on Cessation of Hostilities already established a blocking force to prevent the escalation of tension.

MILF-CCCH chair Butch Malang said the clash is not between the organizations of the two base commands but between families affiliated with the said base commands.
