MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said he is firing a head of agency, 3 generals and several police officers in the next few days to fortify his drive against corruption in his administration.
“I am in the thick of firing people. I intend to fire another maybe 70 or 49 policemen and three generals for corruption...In the next few days, this is really a purging regime,” he said in a speech on Thursday, a transcript of which was send to reporters.
"I am firing another chairman of an entity in government maybe this week and another set of mga policemen," he said, adding that he might spend his remaining four years cleaning up corruption.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Friday said Duterte will replace the chairman of a government-owned and controlled corporation.
"It would appear that there's a second chairman who may be replaced because of graft," he told reporters in a press briefing in Bukidnon.
Duterte has sacked several government officials for supposedly taking unnecessary trips abroad, among them former Dangerous Drugs Board chief Dionisio Santiago, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor chief Terry Ridon, and Maritime Industry Authority Administrator Marcial Amaro III.
Malacañang last week also released a memorandum outlining rules for foreign travels of officials and personnel under the executive branch.
In Thursday's speech during an even attended by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation officials and gambling licensees, Duterte asked the gambling industry players to stay away from graft and corruption, as he thanked them for boosting the country's economy.
“I want to stress again the point that you can come in, expand, do business peacefully but please avoid graft and corruption whether you are the giver or the receiver,” he said.
“All I have to do is for you to cooperate and I said do not give in to extortionist. Be it the police, the BIR, Customs, kasi ‘pag malaman ko, I’ll make it hard for you,” he added.
