The local government of Davao City and authorities are preparing for three international events to be held there this month, which include the visit of Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Soon to be staged in President Rodrigo Duterte’s home base are the 2017 kick-off of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, as well as Miss Universe events.

The village of Mintal is preparing for the visit of Akie Abe, the prime minister’s wife. She is scheduled to go to the cemetery in Mintal, which holds the remains of Japanese farmers who settled there prior to the second World War.

Barangay Mintal was known as the “Little Tokyo of Davao”.

The Japanese government said it plans to build a heritage site in the area, with a museum to house relics unearthed there. All Japanese sites, including the cemetery, will also be rehabilitated.

More than a thousand police officers from different provinces are slated to secure the Abes’ visit, as well as the ASEAN and Miss Universe events.

They are set to inspect malls, hotels, and the SMX Convention Center in Lanang, where the ASEAN kick-off will take place this weekend.

Local police were expected to support members of the Presidential Security Group.

The Philippine National Police also deployed K9 units to secure key areas.

More than 1,000 delegates are expected to attend the ASEAN 2017 kickoff in Davao.
