MANILA, Philippines – Three people were hurt when two grenades exploded Thursday night in Tacurong City.

Police said the two suspects targeted the house of President Quirino Mayor Emilio Salamanca along Malvar Street in Tacurong City.

Salamanca was not harmed from the incident but his helper Junter Escalina and his close-in bodyguard Nilo Casas were injured.

The second grenade, meant to facilitate the escape of the suspects, was lobbed just 100 meters away from the back of Salamanca’s house along Lapu-Lapu Street. A bystander identified as Jonna Parrenyo was hurt.

Police were able to corner one of the suspects identified as Nasser Abdulah from Kabacan, North Cotabato. Abdulah's companion who went inside the Abang Suizo Elementary School was shot dead while holding on to a third grenade.

Police also recovered two motorcycles used by the suspects.

The mayor declined to give a statement but authorities are now looking into politics as a motive in the incident.

Last month, an M203 grenade also exploded in Salamanca’s house but no one was injured from the blast. Report from Francis Canlas, ABS-CBN News
