8 dead in S. Cotabato crash

SOUTH COTABATO -- Eight people died on the spot, while six others were injured after a passenger van collided with a sports utility vehicle along the highway in Crossing Kipot, Barangay Rizal in Banga, South Cotabato Friday afternoon.

Five of the eight fatalities include passengers and the driver of the SUV. They were identified as Abdul Dalidig, Gladys Dalidig, Mary Joy Panes, Leonie Panes, and Aida Laurea.

Their two other companions, Acmad Macarambon and Casim Daligdig, were injured.

The three other fatalities - Lorna Cantong, Vilma Zapanta, and driver Rene Corbedis - were on board the passenger van.

The other injured victims were identified as Mae Nobleta Tabara, Joven Nicor, Rose Nicor, and Loris Jane Tampil.

Based on investigation, the two vehicles were on opposite lanes when the SUV overtook the vehicle in front of it. The driver did not notice the approaching passenger van, resulting in the collision.

The van hit the left rear side of the SUV. Due to the strong impact, the van's front portion was totally damaged, while the SUV was thrown into a nearby rice field.
