MANILA, Philippines – The leader of a notorious robbery group was killed by authorities Monday in Sta. Cruz, Laguna while he was trying to escape, police said.

The slain suspect, identified as Noah Macabasco, was shot dead after the inquest proceedings on the robbery and murder charges filed against Macabasco’s group.

Police said Macabasco tried to escape after he seized the .38 caliber firearm of his police escort PO2 Aldrin Lumberio.

Macabasco was shot as he was attempting to flee, police said.

His family, meanwhile, suspects that there is foul play in Macabasco’s death.

Macabasco, along with Felicisimo Perez, Mark Anthony Quintero and Ivan Acedillo, were arrested last Friday.

The group is believed to be behind the series of robberies and murders in Pakil, Laguna. -- Report from Gus Abelgas, ABS-CBN News
