CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines - The Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City police chief is receiving flak for making breakfast his top priority instead of helping people threatened by Typhoon Pablo leave for safer grounds.
City Mayor Vicente Emano declared "Code Red" early Tuesday, which required the forced evacuation and rescue of people living in threatened communities.
The city was under storm signal number 3.
However, it was only 2 hours after the declaration that police officers, along with acting city police director Senior Superintendent Antonio Montalba arrived at the first area for people to be evacuated from Tibasak, Barangay Macasandig.
Montalba said he was late because he and his men were still having breakfast.
He also claimed that the forced evacuation was not urgent because preemptive evacuation the night before had cleared most of the homes in Tibasak.
"Anong urgent dito? Bakit ako magmamadali?" Montalba said.
Barangay officials in the area were forced to take the initiative and started the evacuation of villagers before police arrived. - ANC
