BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - Former Agrarian Reform Secretary Horacio "Boy" Morales is in critical condition after suffering a heart attack Thursday night.
Morales, 68, was preparing for the final day of the 62nd Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament at the Baguio Country Club when he suffered the attack.
He was quickly brought to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center and then transferred to the Notre Dame Hospital where he is still confined.
Morales has a long history of heart problems and has undergone a heart bypass.
Morales was a young technocrat of the Marcos regime but went underground and joined the National Democratic Front (NDF) after winning a Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) award in 1977.
He was later arrested, tortured while under military detention. He was freed by then-President Cory Aquino after the February 1986 EDSA revolution.
He sought a Senate seat under the leftist Partido ng Bayan in 1987 but lost.
Former President Joseph Estrada appointed him agrarian reform secretary in 1998.
Morales was also president of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), one of the oldest rural development organizations in the country.
Morales' condition improved on Friday after receiving medications at Notre Dame Hospital. -- report from Rex Bate, ABS-CBN Baguio City
