MANILA, Philippines - Puerto Princesa, Palawan Bishop Pedro Arigo is challenging former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes and his brother Coron Mayor Mario Reyes to surface and finally face charges on the killing of environmentalist Dr. Gerry Ortega.
In an interview with Radio Veritas, Arigo said: “What the family is asking, kami sa grupo namin, what we are asking ay magkaroon ng trial for the truth to come out. Yun ang proper forum. Di nila kailangang magtago. If they are not really guilty they have to come out para talaga malaman yung evidence ng both party and so that the truth will come out.”
The Court of Appeals early this week stopped the indictment for murder against the brothers on a technicality. It voided a reinvestigation done by the Department of Justice, which formed a second panel that reversed the ruling of an earlier panel.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, who has been getting flak for the issue, said the case is not yet over.
“It’s sad that they (CA) would suddenly clip the powers of the SOJ (Secretary of Justice) when the previous SOJs, once in a while and on case-to-case basis, exercised such plenary powers.”
Arigo, for his part, said they have not yet judged the Reyes brothers as guilty. “We are not judging them to be guilty, kundi magkaroon ng trial, and see what will happen.”
