MANILA, Philippines - A gruesome crime has blackened the mood of a family in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental Tuesday.

A radio dzMM report said a severed head, belonging to 70-year-old victim Nenita Aguirre, was discovered under the family's Christmas tree in Barangay 7, Moises Padilla past 7 a.m.

The victim's decapitated body was also found inside the house.

Senior Inspector Robert Mansueto of the Moises Padilla police said they have arrested the victim's 37-year-old son, Joji, for the crime. He said police cannot question Joji properly because he is suffering from mental illness.

Joji said he felt sad about his mother's death but cannot recall what happened.

It was learned Joji had been suffering from severe depression after being abandoned by his wife. He had also been going without sleep for 3 days.

Relatives said they had also heard Joji shouting at his mother.

Joji is facing a possible parricide charge. He will also be subjected to psychiatric evaluation. Report from Yasmin Dormido, Radio DZMM
