MANILA, Philippines – An alleged member of terrorist group Abu Sayyaf has been arrested in Basilan, a military official said Thursday.

The suspect, Abu Jaid alias “Ajing," was tagged in the kidnapping and beheading of Golden Harvest plantation workers in Lantawan town in June 2001.

Jaid was arrested at around 10:20 a.m. at Barangay Port Area in Isabela City on Thursday by virtue of a warrant issued by Zamboanga City Judge Leo Jay Principe.

Capt. Alberto Caber, spokesman of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, said the suspect “did not put up a fight because he was surrounded by the troops in a populated area.”

Caber said civilian informants provided the Army with information that led to the suspect’s arrest.

Quoting 1st Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz, Caber said the arrest was a “fruit of our Bayanihan in our communities and strong support from our local officials."
