MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) -- A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Cauayan, Negros Occidental on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the earthquake occurred at 1:21 p.m. Its epicenter was located 26 kilometers northwest of Cauayan.
Aftershocks and damages are expected, Phivolcs said.
Intensity 5 was felt at Binalbagan, Hinobaan and Hinigaran all in Negros Occidental and in Iloilo City; intensity 4 was felt at Sigma in Capiz, Alimodian in Bago City, Nueva Valencia in Guimaras, and Pontevedra in Negros Occidental.
Intensity 3, meanwhile, was felt at Dao in Capiz, Sipalay in Negros Occidental, Patnongon, San Jose and Culasi in Antique as well as in Masbate and Lezo in Aklan; while intensity 2 was felt in Canlaon City and Murcia in Negros Occidental as well as in Dipolog City.
The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said the quake was caused by a movement of the Negros Occidental trench. -- Reports from Dennis Datu and Robert Mano, dzMM
