MANILA, Philippines -- The chief of police of Tubao, La Union was removed from his post after failing to solve killings and other crimes in the municipality, La Union provincial police director said.

Senior Supt. Ramon Purugganan said Senior Inspector Luis Liban was relieved of his duties because of the growing number of unresolved killings and other crimes, including the attempted ambush of Mayor Dante Garcia on September 8.

Barangay councilmen Carlito Viduya and Rodolfo Estoque were shot dead by riding-in-tandem suspects on October 15 and 24, respectively.

Former vice mayor Lazaro Gayo was also killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen on October 29.

The suspects behind the said killings remain to be unidentified by the police.

Meanwhile, Liban said he fully accepts the decision of the La Union provincial police.

"Wala namang hinanakit. Siyempre trabaho lang naman," Liban said.

Deputy Chief Police Senior Inspector Benigno Sumawang was appointed to replace Liban. -- Report from KC Zalavaria, ABS-CBN News Northern Luzon
