COTABATO CITY, Philippines - A suspected New People's Army rebel died and another one was wounded during an encounter with the military in Davao del Sur on Tuesday afternoon.

An undetermined number of suspected NPA rebels clashed with members of the 6th Scout Ranger Company and the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion in Barangay Malibo, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur at around 2 p.m.

Wounded rebel Reynante Dalon was flown to Camp Singco Hospital of the 6th Infantry Division in Maguindanao using a chopper. He sustained gunshot wounds to his lower body.

The lone fatality, meanwhile, has yet to be identified.

Col. Prudencio Asto, 6th ID public affairs chief, said the encounter occurred after residents told the military of the rebels' presence in the area.

"The residents have been fed up with the threats, intimidation and extortion of the NPA for a long time," Asto said.

Government troops recovered two high-powered firearms at the site of the clash. No casualty was reported on the government side.

"There was no collateral damage as a result of the firefight, a manifestation of the soldiers' commitment to the respect for human rights, adherence to international humanitarian law and respect for the rule of law," Asto said.
